Power From Pain
After the initial shock and stress of the pandemic, it is time for us leaders to start engaging fully with the post-pandemic world—for there are tougher and hitherto unprecedented challenges on the near horizon. They cannot be ignored. The planet, and her people, cannot wait.
Research shows that when most people reach a new level of happiness or success they have almost invariably gone through a more challenging time to get there. Time and time again people report that before any breakthrough they have undergone some kind of more difficult, tougher time. When one delves deeper it usually turns out that the way they managed to crack a new skill, or solve a life issue, was to look at what the challenging emotions, feelings or habits were, and work through them to get to a better place. Working through them like this is very different from avoiding or resisting them (and hoping they go away); ignoring them and pretending everything is OK (when inside it really isn’t); or just exploding with the emotions to the detriment of themselves and the people around them. Working through the pain is what allows us to grow – when we attempt to understand why it is there, where it stems from, and what it might be telling us about ourselves, our values and our lives – we have the potential to truly be free of it.
Power through pain is perhaps the most important concept in self-empowerment and is vital if we want to grow the capacity to be peaceful, powerful and positive whatever life throws our way. This concept is at the heart of self-development and self-actualisation – the reaching of our full potential as courageous, extraordinary and free human beings. We mean ‘free’ in the sense that we have the capacity to access the full range of human talents, that we are liberated from the limiting beliefs and poor mental habits that hold us back, and free from any painful moments in our formative years that cast a shadow over our life.
