After the initial shock and stress of the pandemic, it is time for us leaders to start engaging fully with the post-pandemic world—for there are tougher and hitherto unprecedented challenges on the near horizon. They cannot be ignored. The planet, and her people, cannot wait.
Being committed to something, whatever it is, is the pre-requisite to making stuff happen, particularly the bigger things. Anyone can talk about a dream, but not everyone sets up a business, or gets promoted to higher and higher positions at work. These things, and the many rewards they bring, demand that we are committed.
Committed does not mean, however, that we will be upset if the things we are committed to don’t happen for whatever reason. In fact, we draw a useful distinction between being committed to something happening, and being caught up in whether it happens or not. The moment we become caught up (focused on the results as the key to our happiness) is the moment that we are no longer free – because our happiness, wellbeing or even just normal functioning depends on whether we get the thing or not. This is inevitably a recipe for pain and suffering. So if we can walk the fine line of being committed (and 100% passionate and dedicated to something) without starting to think we won’t be OK if it doesn’t happen then we become enormously powerful in how much difference we can make in the world.
The more committed we are, the more likely we are to make purposeful business decisions, or motivate a team effectively – without the need to suffer if stuff, normal everyday stuff, gets in the way.
The secret with true bona fide commitment is that we don’t let everyday obstacles – hurdles that everyone has to deal with – get in the way of doing all we can do to make whatever we are committed to really happen.
Do we really think that the founders of Virgin, the people behind Cancer Research or the civil rights movement had no obstacles? Of course we all know they did. But they were committed and therefore they did what it took to finish the job… never letting themselves be stopped by anyone or anything.
