An Act of Leadership is an act that has one purpose, and one only – to positively benefit other people and help them move towards their vision. It can be something for someone you work closely with, or a colleague that you don’t even know, but the key is that it is done for the good of the whole. This means we do it without expecting to get anything back from anybody. We don’t expect respect, money, applause – nothing. It is the true meaning of giving – giving without needing anything in return. The irony is, the more we perform Acts of Leadership in our professional lives, the more successful we become. Don’t take our word for it; try it out. 

One thing to be wary of: Some people spend a lot of their time doing things for other people. If this is the case for you, we suggest either performing an Act of Leadership that benefits you, or doing something for others and really studying yourself to see if you wanted some kind of recognition back. What people often find is that underneath the desire to be overly helpful there might well be some kind of expectation of getting some response back (from those they help or others around who witness it). There may even be little bit of private enjoyment in knowing that they give and give and nobody at all recognises how much they do so. There is nothing wrong with any of this; we ALL do it from time to time. However, this kind of giving rarely makes us happy. So if you recognise yourself in any of this, try performing an Act of Leadership just for the hell of it – just because, and for no other reason. And then keep a sharp eye out if any sneaky part of your mind wants something back! If it does, practise giving without expectations and see how things shift around your ability to make things happen.
